- Security Deposit: The Tamil Nadu tenancy Act (2017) caps residential deposits at 3 months' rent, but on the ground ~6 months is still the working norm in Chennai, and premium pockets (Nungambakkam, ECR) can ask 6-10 months. Madras Day (August 22) marks Chennai's official founding in 1639, weeks of heritage walks, history talks, and exhibitions. The Mylapore Festival (January) brings live music, street food, and Kolam competitions to the streets around Kapaleeshwarar Temple. Chennai Sangamam in January adds rural Tamil folk arts to the calendar.
Finding Your Place of Worship: Beyond the heritage landmarks, every Chennai neighbourhood has its own temples, churches, mosques and congregations. Temples generally open early (around 6am) and reopen in the evening (about 4-8:30pm), remove footwear, dress modestly, and keep phones silent near the sanctum. For churches, the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore publishes parish Mass timings (the Santhome Basilica, St Mary's at Fort St. George, and the Velankanni shrine off the ECR are popular). The Thousand Lights and Wallajah (Big) Mosque anchor the Muslim community, with neighbourhood masjids for the five daily prayers, while the main Gurudwara sits on G.N. Chetty Road, T. Nagar. Getting Around Chennai
Chennai is a sprawling city, but its transport architecture is improving rapidly. Phase 1 of the Chennai Metro (Blue and Green Lines) is operational. Phase 2, three new corridors covering 118.9 km and 128 stations, rolls out from 2026 onwards, with the Madhavaram-to-Sholinganallur Red Line being the single biggest game-changer for OMR commutes. Auto-rickshaws, Ola, Uber, MTC buses, and MRTS suburban rail all play a part in daily life.
Metro Lines (2026)
Blue Line (Wimco Nagar · Chennai Airport)
Phase 1, fully operational. ~33 km, 26 stations. Runs through the city centre via Chennai Central, Egmore, and Anna Salai. The most useful single line for new arrivals, direct airport connection to the city core.
Green Line (Chennai Central, St. Thomas Mount)
Phase 1, operational. 22 km, 17 stations. Connects North Chennai to the south via Vadapalani and Ekkattuthangal. Interchanges with Blue Line at Chennai Central and Alandur.
Red Line (Madhavaram · Sholinganallur)

Moving Your Vehicle to Tamil Nadu
If you're bringing a personal vehicle from another state, you'll need to re-register with the Tamil Nadu RTO and pay applicable road tax (lifetime tax for private vehicles). The No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from your previous state's RTO is the prerequisite document. IKAN coordinates and assists with the RTO re-registration, from NOC procurement at origin to fitness, road tax payment, and the new TN registration plate at destination.
Peak Hours Reality: Chennai peak traffic (8-11am, 5-9pm) can add 30 to 60 minutes to any road journey. GST Road (airport corridor), Anna Salai (Mount Road), and OMR junctions at Madhya Kailash and Tidel Park are the most congested corridors. Schedule important meetings outside peak windows, or take the metro / MRTS where the corridor allows.

Chennai is a tropical coastal city, the climate is shaped entirely by the Bay of Bengal and the Northeast Monsoon. Humidity is the single biggest adjustment for intra-India movers, particularly those coming from Bangalore or Pune. Chennai's main rainfall comes not in the Southwest monsoon (which mostly skirts the city) but in the Northeast monsoon from October through early December. The rain is heavy, often cyclonic, Bay of Bengal cyclones (Vardah 2016, Michaung 2023) can disrupt the city for days. Low-lying areas (T. Nagar, Velachery, parts of Mylapore) flood. Generator reliability matters. Most years the monsoon ends by mid-December, releasing the magnificent Margazhi window.

Things Chennai Won't Tell You
Chennai rewards preparation. These are the realities every intra-India relocator deserves to know before signing anything or forming firm expectations.
Humidity is the Real Adjustment
Chennai's temperature reads "only" 32-38°C through most of the year, but humidity sits at 70-85% from March through October. The "real-feel" temperature regularly exceeds 45°C. Energy bills run high. Mould and corrosion are real maintenance considerations. If you're moving from Bangalore or Pune, this is the single biggest lifestyle change.
Tamil Language Reality
Hindi has lower penetration in Chennai than in any other major Indian metro, Tamil cultural pride is real and assumed. English works in offices and premium hospitality. Everyday transactions, autos, kirana shops, building staff, mid-tier restaurants, often need Tamil. Learning even ten Tamil phrases transforms daily life. Don't lead with Hindi.
Cyclone Season
Chennai sits on the Bay of Bengal cyclone path. October-December cyclones can disrupt the city for days, Vardah (2016), Michaung (2023). Low-lying areas (T. Nagar, Velachery, parts of Mylapore) flood. Verify generator reliability and floor level before signing a lease. Follow NDMA and IMD WhatsApp groups during monsoon.
Conservative Dress Norms
Chennai is genuinely more conservative than Bangalore or Mumbai. Modest dress is expected in temples, traditional restaurants, and middle-class neighbourhoods. Mylapore, Triplicane, and T. Nagar particularly so. Premium areas (Adyar, Besant Nagar, OMR new builds) are more cosmopolitan, but cultural awareness matters.
OMR Traffic at Peak
The OMR IT corridor between Madhya Kailash and Sholinganallur runs 20-35 km depending on your specific office, with peak-hour transit times of 60 to 90 minutes. Carpool, work flexible hours, or live close. The Metro Red Line (Phase 2) will materially improve this from 2026 onwards but isn't fully open yet, plan accordingly.
Water Reliability
Chennai had a "Day Zero" water crisis in 2019. Premium gated communities (Adyar, Anna Nagar, OMR high-rises) are well-supplied; mid-tier areas can have water stress in March-June. Verify water-supply arrangement before signing, most premium apartments have bore-well plus Metro Water plus tanker arrangements.
Vegetarian-Dominant Dining
Chennai's restaurant culture is heavily vegetarian-skewed in traditional Tamil establishments. Saravana Bhavan, Sangeetha, A2B, Mathsya, all pure vegetarian. Non-vegetarian options exist (Anjappar, Buhari, Ponnusamy for Chettinad meat dishes, and global cuisine in Nungambakkam) but the default is vegetarian. Adjust expectations.
Parking is Hard in Inner Chennai
Mylapore, T. Nagar, Triplicane, Nungambakkam, parking is genuinely brutal. Auto + Ola/Uber is the rational strategy for inner-city errands. Personal vehicles make more sense for OMR-based residents, ECR commuters, or families with school runs. Don't import your "Bangalore driving mindset", adapt to Chennai's specific traffic culture.
School Admissions Close Early
Chennai's top CBSE schools (PSBB, Chettinad, DAV, Sankara) run 3-6 month waitlists and mid-year admissions are nearly impossible. Many close their main intake by January for the June academic year. If you're relocating with school-age children, begin applications before your move, not after you arrive, or you may lose a full year to your preferred school.
Women's Safety & Night Travel
Chennai is among India's safer metros for women, but sensible habits still matter. Use app cabs (Ola / Uber) with live trip-sharing and the in-app SOS button after dark, and prefer a booked Rapido auto to a flagged-down one late at night. Adyar, Besant Nagar, Anna Nagar and the OMR high-rise belt are comfortable for solo travel; stick to well-lit main roads in older inner-city pockets. Save the state Women Helpline (1091) and install the Tamil Nadu Police Kavalan SOS app for a direct line to help. The Metro runs women-reserved coaches, and most stations and gated communities have women-staffed security.
