Getting around Chennai

Chennai is spread out, but getting around is improving fast.

Phase 1 of the Chennai Metro (the Blue and Green Lines) is running. Phase 2 adds three new lines, 118.9 km and 128 stations, opening from 2026 onwards. Its Madhavaram-to-Sholinganallur Red Line will help OMR commuters most. Auto-rickshaws, Ola, Uber, MTC buses and MRTS suburban rail all play a part in daily life.

Metro Lines (2026)

Blue Line (Wimco Nagar · Chennai Airport)
Phase 1, fully operational. ~33 km, 26 stations. Runs through the city centre via Chennai Central, Egmore, and Anna Salai. The most useful single line for new arrivals, direct airport connection to the city core.
Green Line (Chennai Central, St. Thomas Mount)
Phase 1, operational. 22 km, 17 stations. Connects North Chennai to the south via Vadapalani and Ekkattuthangal. Interchanges with Blue Line at Chennai Central and Alandur.22 km
Red Line (Madhavaram · Sholinganallur)
Phase 2, rolling out from 2026 onwards. The most consequential addition, direct underground metro from north Chennai through Adyar to the heart of the OMR IT corridor. Will transform commutes for hundreds of thousands of IT workers and is reshaping property values along the route.
Orange Line (Light House · Poonamallee)
Phase 2. Will connect Marina Beach to the western suburbs and onward toward Sriperumbudur. Big implications for auto-sector commuters who currently rely on GST Road.
Purple Line (Madhavaram · SIPCOT)
Phase 2. Connects north Chennai to the SIPCOT industrial estate via the eastern corridor. Total Phase 2 network: 118.9 km, 128 stations. Combined with Phase 1, Chennai Metro will reach ~173 km on completion.118.9 km173 km

Getting Around Day-to-Day

MRTS Suburban Rail
Beach to Velachery (south corridor) and Chennai Central to Tambaram / Avadi / Gummidipoondi. Cheap, fast for long corridors. Premium frequency rising with new Vande Metro services.
Ola / Uber / Rapido
All three operate well in Chennai. Ola Corporate accounts via your employer's travel desk. Rapido bike-taxis excellent for solo hops through congested inner Chennai.
Auto-Rickshaws
The Chennai backbone. Metered fares official; negotiation often applies. UPI accepted at most stands. Parking is hard in inner Chennai, auto + Ola is the rational strategy.
MTC Buses
Metropolitan Transport Corporation runs comprehensive routes; AC services on premium corridors. The Chalo app helps navigate routes for visitors and new residents.
Vehicle Registration
Moving Your Vehicle to Tamil Nadu
If you're bringing a personal vehicle from another state, you'll need to re-register with the Tamil Nadu RTO and pay applicable road tax (lifetime tax for private vehicles). The No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from your previous state's RTO is the prerequisite document. IKAN coordinates and assists with the RTO re-registration, from NOC procurement at origin to fitness, road tax payment, and the new TN registration plate at destination.
At peak hours (8-11am, 5-9pm), Chennai traffic can add 30 to 60 minutes to any road journey. GST Road (airport corridor), Anna Salai (Mount Road), and OMR junctions at Madhya Kailash and Tidel Park are the most congested corridors. Schedule important meetings outside peak windows, or take the metro / MRTS where the corridor allows.

02Apps & Digital Life

Apps to install

Chennai runs on phone apps, possibly more than any other big Indian city. That comes from its IT workforce on the OMR and how quickly Tamil Nadu took to digital payments. Download these before you land and your first week will be much easier.
