01City Overview

What Chennai is like

Chennai made its name by building things.

It makes cars at Sriperumbudur and software at Sholinganallur. Patients fly in from across South Asia for its hospitals, and its music fills 3,000 concerts every December. No other major Indian city is a beach city, a car-making capital and an IT power at once, and Chennai is also the centre of Tamil cultural life. Life moves at an easy pace, the welcome is real, and old customs run deep.

Moving from Bangalore, Hyderabad or Mumbai? The biggest adjustment is humidity, Chennai's summer (Apr-Jun) is hotter and stickier than any of the three. The second adjustment is the language, Tamil pride is real and Hindi has lower penetration here than in any other Indian metro. What you gain is a coastal city with extraordinary cultural depth, excellent engineering and IT talent, and one of India's most affordable premium-housing markets on the OMR.

02Culture & Heritage

History, faith and the arts

Modern Chennai (once Madras) dates from 1639, when the British East India Company built Fort St. George.

Tamil civilisation goes back two thousand years, to Sangam literature, the rock-cut temples of the Pallava and Chola dynasties, Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam dance, and on to Tamil cinema. Its religious history runs just as deep. In Mylapore, the Santhome Cathedral Basilica stands over the tomb of St Thomas the apostle, who is believed to have been martyred in Chennai in AD 72. Only two other churches in the world are built over an apostle's tomb: St Peter's in Rome and Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Every December the city holds a month-long festival of classical music and dance, the largest of its kind in the world.

Margazhi Music Season
Chennai's signature cultural moment, often called the world's largest classical music festival. More than 3,000 Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam performances across 30+ sabhas over six weeks. Highlights: Music Academy, Narada Gana Sabha, Krishna Gana Sabha, Mylapore Fine Arts. Most concerts are free or modestly ticketed. Even non-aficionados should attend at least one, it's a defining Chennai experience.
Jan 14-17
Pongal · Tamil Harvest Festival
Tamil Nadu's most important annual celebration. Four days: Bhogi Pongal (cleansing), Thai Pongal (boiling milk-rice), Mattu Pongal (cattle worship), Kaanum Pongal (family). Houses are decorated with elaborate kolam patterns. Traditional sweet pongal is shared with neighbours. Public holiday, many businesses close. The single most authentic Tamil festival to experience.
Year-round
Mahabalipuram · UNESCO Heritage
Sixty kilometres south on the East Coast Road, the 7th-8th century Pallava-dynasty rock-cut temples of Mahabalipuram are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Shore Temple, Pancha Rathas, Arjuna's Penance bas-relief, and the precarious "Krishna's Butter Ball" boulder. A weekend escape that sits 60 minutes from Marina Beach.
Aug 22
Madras Day & Mylapore Festival
Madras Day (August 22) marks Chennai's official founding in 1639, weeks of heritage walks, history talks, and exhibitions. The Mylapore Festival (January) brings live music, street food, and Kolam competitions to the streets around Kapaleeshwarar Temple. Chennai Sangamam in January adds rural Tamil folk arts to the calendar.
Finding Your Place of Worship: Beyond the heritage landmarks, every Chennai neighbourhood has its own temples, churches, mosques and congregations. Temples generally open early (around 6am) and reopen in the evening (about 4-8:30pm), remove footwear, dress modestly, and keep phones silent near the sanctum. For churches, the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore publishes parish Mass timings (the Santhome Basilica, St Mary's at Fort St. George, and the Velankanni shrine off the ECR are popular). The Thousand Lights and Wallajah (Big) Mosque anchor the Muslim community, with neighbourhood masjids for the five daily prayers, while the main Gurudwara sits on G.N. Chetty Road, T. Nagar. Use Google Maps or ask your building's RWA for the nearest option, and IKAN can point you to places of worship close to your new home.

03Climate

Chennai's three seasons

Chennai is a tropical city on the coast.

Its weather comes from the Bay of Bengal and the Northeast Monsoon. The humidity is the biggest thing to get used to, especially if you are coming from Bangalore or Pune. The pleasant months, December to early March, line up almost exactly with the Margazhi music and dance season, and that is no accident.

Winter · Chennai's Finest Window
December · February
Chennai's most pleasant season. About 21 to 31°C, lower humidity, sea breezes from the Bay of Bengal. The social and cultural calendar is at its busiest, Margazhi Music Season, Mylapore Festival, Chennai Sangamam, Pongal. This is the season Chennaiites live for. Pack a light shawl for late January / early February evenings.
Margazhi Music Season, book sabha concerts early
Beach mornings at Marina and Besant Nagar are perfect
Peak social season, restaurants are booked weeks out
Hot & Humid Summer
March · July
Chennai's hardest season. Average highs reach 35 to 37°C from April to June, the hottest days pass 40°C, and humidity often above 75%. The "real-feel" temperature regularly exceeds 45°C. Air conditioning is non-negotiable. Many Chennai families relocate weekends to Yelagiri, Yercaud, or Pondicherry. Outdoor activities shift to dawn (5:30-7am) or post-sunset (7pm onwards). Hydration is critical, carry water everywhere.
Real-feel 45°C+, limit midday outdoor exposure
Hydration + ORS sachets are essential
AC servicing before March is non-negotiable
Northeast Monsoon
October · December
Chennai's main rainfall comes not in the Southwest monsoon (which mostly skirts the city) but in the Northeast monsoon from October through early December. The rain is heavy, often cyclonic, Bay of Bengal cyclones (Vardah 2016, Michaung 2023) can disrupt the city for days. Low-lying areas (T. Nagar, Velachery, parts of Mylapore) flood. Generator reliability matters. Most years the monsoon ends by mid-December, releasing the magnificent Margazhi window.
Cyclone alerts via NDMA, IMD WhatsApp groups, follow them
Avoid ground-floor units in T. Nagar / Velachery if you can
Generator (DG set) reliability is critical, verify before signing
